Good point. Is melancholia a form of self absorption? It might be evoked by bullying or a negative spirit or wartime activity. Trauma leading to depression. The way I see it, there’s a great deal of self focus in being depressed. You point out that he said that he wanted to hurt himself. That’s a self-inflicted concept. While the desire to hurt oneself could come from traumatic experience it is self-conceived and self-inflicted if carried out. In Henry’s case, he was hurting himself, and trying to carry it out, but someone else successfully carried it out.
